Minnesotans United — the coalition that worked to defeat last November's proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and then switched gears to help get the gay marriage bill passed — says it is forming a political action committee to protect legislators, Republicans and DFLers, who voted for the legislation.
MN United PAC "will work to support and re-elect legislators who voted in favor of extending the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in 2013," the group says.
Richard Carlbom, the group's campaign manager, said in a statement:
"Minnesotans United recognizes that casting a yes vote in favor of allowing same-sex couples to marry was a decision that many legislators struggled with. But their leadership and choice to stand on the side of families and freedom in Minnesota should be commended. Minnesotans statewide called on the Legislature to take action this year, and a majority of legislators answered that call and made our state the twelfth to ensure that same-sex couples and their families are finally treated equally under the law."
The PAC says it will provide "grassroots and financial support" to Republicans and DFLers who voted for gay marriage.
"These legislators cast an important historic vote, and now it’s our turn to show our appreciation and tell them that we’ve got their back," Carlbom said.
