Republican Bill Weber, a former mayor and city council member in Luverne, will run for the state Senate in District 22.
There'll be no incumbent in the race; Republican state Sen. Doug Magnus announced this week that he won't seek re-election after four terms in the House and one in the Senate.
Weber told the Worthington Daily Globe that he hopes to fill Magnus' shoes in the Legislature.
“Had (Magnus) run for re-election, I would not be doing this,” Weber said. “I had a little advance notice from Doug of what he was thinking, but until he made his decision, I didn’t know.”
Weber spent 16 years in Luverne city government, eight years on the city council and eight as mayor. He made a previous bid for the state Senate seat in 2006.
