A public debate on the proposed marriage amendment will be held Tuesday in Brainerd, sponsored by the local League of Women Voters.

The proposal will be on the statewide ballot Nov. 6. If approved, it would amend the state Constitution to declare that marriage is between one man and one woman. Gay marriage is already illegal in the state, but amendment supporters want to solidify the notion.

The Brainerd debate is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Chalberg Theatre at Central Lakes College.

Supporing the amendment is Sen. Warren Limmer, R-Maple Grove. Opposing it will be the Rev. Deborah Celley,  pastor of the First Congregational Church of Christ in Brainerd.

Legal aspects of the amendment will be presented by Matt Gehring, of the state House staff.

Moderate will be Karen Christopherson, a member of the League of Women Voters Brainerd Lakes Area.

The debate is open to the public and free.

The Brainerd Dispatch notes that the board of the League of Women Voters Brainerd Lakes Area voted in December to oppose the amendment.
