Habitat for Humanity, the nonprofit that builds affordable homes for those in need, kicks off a 500-mile bike ride this month to raise awareness and funds.

The 135 riders on the route through south central Minnesota will also celebrate many milestones for the group:

  • The 20th anniversary of the Habitat 500 bike ride.
  • The 20th time that Susan and Walter Baker of Mound have volunteered for the event.
  • The group's 2,000th Minnesota home, being built in St. Louis Park, where the ride starts, and they'll stop in Hutchinson for two days to work on the group's  2,001st Minnesota home.

The riders will go 50 to 100 miles per day, from July 15-21, making overnight stops in six cities.
