Gov. Mark Dayton suffered a legal setback in December, when a Ramsey County judge blocked his plan to let child-care workers vote on joining a union.
Now, the governor has thrown in the towel (Wipee?) on that effort, saying he won't appeal. Instead, he hopes DFLers will take control of the Legislature after the November elections and then they can call for the union election.
Dayton said in a statement:
"Although I strongly disagree with the Court's decision, I will not appeal it. I will work toward electing a new legislature, which will support the right of working people to decide for themselves whether or not they want to join a union."
Dayton had issued an executive order calling for 4,000 child care workers in the state subsidy program to vote yes or no on a union, but opponents, including many of those day-care workers and Republican legislative leaders, went to court claiming the governor went too far in calling the election on his own.
