Wabasha County commissioners realize that $55,000 isn't a great salary to attract a new county coordinator, and they did just abolish the old county administrator position in December, but they're going to post the coordinator's job anyway.
The job also has benefits, says the Winona Daily News.
Department heads have been filling administrative roles since the county board eliminated the county administrator job rather than firing the previous administrator, David Johnson.
Since February, a court-appointed commission has been looking into the county's government structure and could eventually call for a countywide referendum on the matter, the Winona paper said.
And if the commission or a referendum calls for another change, the soon-to-be-hired coordinator could then be fired, commissioners said.
Commissioner Deb Roschen wants to hire a local for the coordinator job, the paper said.
“I say we look for diamonds in our backyard first before we open it up,” she said.
Roschen said the offered salary isn’t “the most generous” compared to other administrative jobs, but the county must move forward.
