Senate rejects plan to move primary election to June

There's always a chance for a comeback with any rejected bill at the Legislature, but the plan to move the state's primary election up to June took a hit Monday when the state Senate said, "No."

The bill was sent back to conference committee.

Supporters say the idea is to move the primary from August, when people are vacationing and not thinking about politics. But some senators worried that moving it to June would make the general election season even longer and more tedious than it already is.

The House had earlier voted in favor of the June primary, and Gov. Mark Dayton likes it, too, as do the DFL and GOP parties.

So who knows? It might still become part of that last-minute horse-trading adventure so beloved by legislators at the end of session.
