St. Paul officials will rename a set of sports fields Saturday in honor of local NFL star Stacy Robinson, who died last year of multiple myeloma at age 50.
Some former NFL players and Robinson's family will be on hand for the ceremony at the old Jimmy Lee Fields, at the Oxford/Jimmy Lee Center, 270 Lexington Parkway.
Robinson played basketball and football at St. Paul Central High School and then played football at North Dakota State, before playing six seasons with the New York Giants. He started and caught three passes in the Giants' Super Bowl XXI victory in 1987.
After he retired, he helped raise money for the renovation of the athletic fields but died before they were reopened.
Schedule of the Saturday renaming activities:
- 10 a.m. Autograph Signings
- 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Panel Discussion: “Professionals in Sports Assorted Sports Careers”
- 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Resource Fair and Book Give-away
- 11 a.m. Free Catered Lunch (served until food runs out)
- Noon to 12:45 p.m. Field Renaming Dedication Ceremony
- 1:15 to 3 p.m,. Football Field Activities
The fields had been named for Jimmy Lee, a prominent sports official who was the first African-American umpire in the Big Ten.
Lee's name will stay on the rec center, city officials said.
