U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar will headline a "building breaking" event Friday at the old ammunition plant site in Arden Hills.
That's the 427-acre site that was once shopped as a possible site for a new Vikings stadium.
The Vikings deal didn't work out (as they opted instead for a new downtown Minneapolis stadium on the Metrodome site), so Ramsey County bought the site last year and is now preparing it for redevelopment by demolishing buildings and cleaning up contamination — hence the "building breaking" rather than "ground breaking."
The site was once home to the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant, which was at its peak during World War II, and was in business through the Vietnam War.
Friday's 3:30 p.m. event will also feature:
- Congresswoman Betty McCollum
- Ramsey County Commissioner Blake Huffman
- Ramsey County Commissioner Rafael Ortega
- Arden Hills Mayor David Grant.
