Fireworks at the Capitol. And we're not talking stadium debates.
The state Senate has approved a bill that would allow more potent fireworks to be sold and used in Minnesota. Right now, only sparklers and low-explosive items are legal, but there's always been a steady flow of the more powerful types from Wisconsin and other states.
Years ago, Wisconsin and Minnesota cops even set up sting operations, watching for Minnesota license plates in the parking lots of Wisconsin fireworks dealers, then stopping those cars when they crossed the Minnesota border. A lawsuit and bad publicity put an end to that.
Next, the Minnesota House is expected to consider the bill, and if it passes there, and the governor doesn't listen to law enforcement and medical experts who don't like the idea, then the law could go into effect June 1, in time for this year's Fourth of July.
