Former state Rep. Nora Slawik has received the DFL nomination in her run for mayor of Maplewood.
Also running in the race is Diana Longrie, who was mayor for four years from 2006 to 2010 during a contentious period at city hall that included running battles over a city manager and many lawsuits.
Current Mayor Will Rossbach, who beat Longrie in 2009, is not running for re-election.
If more than the two current mayoral candidates file for the race, there will be a city primary election in August.
Slawik served seven terms in the state House, in 1997-98 and then from 2001-2012. She was recently app0inted to the city's Parks and Recreation Commission.
In her campaign material, Slawik says:
"I am a strong supporter of preserving and protecting our parks and recreation system. I want to keep our high quality police, fire and services our citizens expect and I want to help jobs grow and thrive in our city. Most of all I want to provide positive, professional leadership and move our city towards a responsible future."
Longrie, an attorney, says she started her city political career with an appointment to the Maplewood Community Design Review Board. She was elected mayor in 2005 and says:
"I was elected the first woman mayor to Maplewood. Being the first woman mayor wasn’t easy. As I’m sure you are aware, women are often held to a different set of rules than the rules followed by the “Old Boys’ Club.” However, I so enjoyed serving as mayor, working with the citizens and giving them voice that, after being encouraged by many, I decided to run and serve once more."
