On Monday, the day the Minnesota Senate votes on approving same-sex marriage, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman proclaimed May 13 to 17 “Freedom to Marry Week” in the city.

“The State of Minnesota is about to write history,” he said. “Becoming the first Midwest state in the country to legislatively legalize the freedom to marry for all committed couples is an event worth celebrating.”

Rainbow flags were put atop the Wabasha Street Bridge, which has been temporarily named the “Freedom to Marry Bridge,” the city said.

“Today, we line the Freedom to Marry Bridge with pride flags to show the importance of this legislation to the City of Saint Paul, the families that live here, and to those who have been waiting for this day for many years,” Coleman said.
