Minnesota budget officials said state revenue collection in April was $153 million ahead of forecast.
Actual revenue was $1.742 billion, versus the $1.590 billion forecast in February. Individual income tax revenue was $132 million more than forecast, apparently becauser of larger-than-expected payments accompanying tax return extensions.
Sales tax revenue was $4 million lower than expected.
The report from the Department of Management and Budget says monthly revenue variations should be interpreted with caution. And it notes that some taxpayers may have shifted income into the 2012 tax year because higher federal tax rates kicked in this year, and that could mean a reduction in the forecast for 2013.
The department plans a more complete report on April, May and June revenue in its July economic update.
