Woman's double-voting case resolved

Margaret Schneider, the 86-year-old St. Peter woman who voted twice in a primary election last year, reached a plea agreement with Nicollet County prosecutors and won't go to jail.

Schneider, who has Parkinson's and show signs of dementia, has said she filed an absentee ballot in the election, then forgot about it and walked to the polling place to vote again on Election Day.

Prosecutors had said state law required them to file the charges in the case, even though it didn't appear there was intent to break the voting law.

Under the plea agreement, there is no fine or jail time, but Schneider must obey the state's voting laws in the future, says the Mankato Free Press. If she does, the matter will be erased from her record in November 2014.
