Mayors Against Illegal Guns plans a string of events around the country Thursday to draw attention to their demands that Congress take action to reduce gun violence.

The Minnesota portion of the National Day to Demand Action will be at the Hennepin County's Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka at 9:30 a.m., when  Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Chaska Police Chief Scott Knight will urge Minnesotans to pressure lawmakers to take action on universal background checks and other ways to decrease gun violence.

Also on hand there will be John Souter, a survivor of the Accent Signage shootings in Minneapolis last fall.

Organizers say the series of national rallies will be "the largest gun violence advocacy event in history and is part of the largest field campaign in U.S. history to address gun violence."
