The Sauk Rapids City Council passed a resolution Monday disapproving of the conduct of Mayor Brad Gunderson, following the mayor's arrest last month on drunk driving charges.
The resolution, passed 4-0, said Gunderson’s personal conduct is unbecoming of an elected official and is below the high standard set for elected public officials in the city, reports the St. Cloud Times.
Gunderson was charged with drunk driving after he drove into a yard Feb. 17. His blood alcohol level registered at 0.26, far above the 0.08 legal limit.
Two weeks ago, Gunderson apologized at the council meeting for his actions but said he would not resign. At Monday's meeting, he had no public comment.
Although the council has no power to require Gunderson's resignation, one council member said it would be a good idea, the paper said:
Council member Kurt Hunstiger asked Gunderson to reconsider his decision not to resign.
"The mayor’s lost the trust of the residents," Hunstiger said. "I ask you to listen to the people and citizens that elected you."
The paper said Gunderson in on an "unpaid leave of absence from his job at Metro Bus, where he is a driver for its Dial-A-Ride Program."
