The Minnesota State Council on Disability says that disability parking spots at the state Capitol, which used to be adjacent to the building, have been moved across the street because of ongoing construction.
The old spots in Lot N were on the northwest side of the building; the new spots are across the street in Lot B, north of University Avenue, and require use of the underground tunnel.
Margot Imdieke Cross, MSCOD's accessibility specialist, reports on getting to the Capitol from the new parking places for those in wheelchairs:
"All 12 spaces [disability parking spots] have been relocated to Lot B, all the power door openers are working and the tunnel didn't seem that long. The tunnel was well lit and there were resting benches provided."
Here are new directions to the disability spots from Imdieke Cross:
- Instead of pulling into Lot N [the old location], cross University Avenue and continue north on Park Street for one block until you reach Sherburne Avenue;
- Turn right or east on Sherburne Avenue. There are some entrances to Lot B on Sherburne, so you can turn right into the lot at this point, or:
- Proceed to Capitol Street, turn right or south , go 2/3rds of the way down the street and turn right into the parking lot. This entrance will take you directly to disability parking.
