Latino youths from southern Minnesota will meet with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., next week as part of National Latino Advocacy Days.
Young people and group leaders will be among the 40-member contingent from the area. They'll meet with Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken and Rep. Tim Walz, says the Austin Daily Herald.
Jeffrey Jurewicz, a community organizer with the Centro Campesino advocacy group, which organized the trip, told the paper:
"With immigration reform so imminent, we wanted to make sure as many of our youth leaders as possible will be able to make their voices heard."
Immigration reform will be a big topic for the group. Miguel Garate, another youth leader who will join several Riverland Community College students on the trip, said:
"Sometimes I’m worried about the kids, especially when it comes to their parents and immigration status."
The youth leaders will also receive advocacy training during the visit to D.C.
