The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority has selected Mortenson Construction to build a new Vikings stadium in downtown Minneapolis.
The local company has previously built homes for the Twins, Timberwolves, Wild and Gopher football teams.
The $975 million Vikings stadium project is scheduled to be finished in time for the 2016 NFL season. The team will have to play one or two seasons at the Gopher's facility while new stadium construction is under way at the current Metrodome site.
Two other companies were in the running for the Vikings job:
- Skanska AB, based in Sweden that has built several NFL stadiums,
- Hunt Construction, a Scottsdale, Ariz. company that has built a dozen NFL stadiums
Groundbreaking is expected this fall.
