Protect Minnesota, a group trying to end gun violence, plans to protest sales loopholes Saturday at an event outside a gun show in Duluth.

The silent protest is designed to draw attention to laws that exempt private gun sales from background checks.

It comes as several gun safety/regulation bills are about to get hearings in the Legislature during the coming weeks. Proposals include a ban on assault weapons, universal background checks and a bill that would allow teachers to carry firearms on school grounds.

"It doesn’t make sense that some people, possibly someone who is prohibited to purchase a gun through licensed dealers, can still legally purchase and own guns," said Joan Peterson of Protect Minnesota. "This easy access to guns can lead to potential gun deaths and injuries. If we are serious about saving lives, this is one measure that should be supported by our elected leaders."

The Saturday protest is near the Duluth Gun and Knife Show at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC). The show runs Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the show is $5 for adults; children are free with an adult.

Protesters will meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Canal Park Drive near the William A. Irvin and entrance to the DECC parking lot.
