Robin Courrier, a teacher and head of the Mankato Teachers' Association, says she'll run in a special election for the state House seat in District 19A.
Gov. Mark Dayton will call the special election to replace DFL state Rep. Terry Morrow, who was re-elected in November but is resigning to take a job in Chicago.
Courrier says she'll seek the DFL endorsement in the race. An announcement about her candidacy says:
Courrier has a unique understanding of the issues facing area school districts, local bargaining units and labor unions. The combination of public school experience, local governing association and strong roots in the community is what makes Courrier the right candidate to bring a strong voice of consensus and common sense to the legislature.
She said:
"Minnesota has a proud legacy of commitment to education, health care and job creation that has contributed to a healthy population. As we look toward economic recovery, it is critical that we renew our commitment to our citizens."
Her husband, Chad Courrier, is a sports writer for the Mankato Free Press.
On the Republican side, the New Ulm Journal reported that Allen Quist is considering a run for the seat after his unsuccessful bid for Congress last year. He had served three terms in the state House in the 1980s and twice ran for governor in the 1990s.
The Independence Party is also looking at candidates for the seat.
