Tom Horner, who was the Independence Party's candidate for governor in 2010, is returning to his public relations roots and starting a new firm with his daughter, Amanda.

Horner started his career as an editor at the Suburban Sun newspapers and then worked as an aide to former U.S. Sen. Dave Durenberger.

In 1989, he co-founded the Himle Horner public relations firm, now known as Himle, Rapp & Co. He left the firm in 2010, while running for governor.

The new firm, Horner Strategies, says it is "designed to help clients succeed in today’s contentious and cluttered marketplace."

It will have a small list of clients.

The firm says Amanda Horner, who graduated from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, in 2011 with a B.A. in communication and journalism, has "managed publicity, events and communications for diverse clients and organizations. She worked for a Minnesota-based public relations firm where her work ranged from publicity for the Basilica Block Party to public affairs outreach for a major legislative initiative. In addition, she has worked in communications for a non-profit social services organization and for a Minnesota university."
