University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler has been named to the Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council by Janet Napolitano, secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
It's a new council, made up of university presidents and academic leaders. It's job: advise Homeland Security.
“President Kaler’s extensive experience and expertise will make him a valuable asset to the Council,” said Napolitano. “I look forward to working with him on these critical issues.”
Some of those issues are student and recent graduate recruitment, international students, academic research, campus and community resiliency, security and preparedness, and faculty exchanges.
Kaler said in a statement: "This is a great opportunity for the University of Minnesota and the state of Minnesota, and I’m honored to join my colleagues from across the country on this council. The University has a great deal of expertise that will help advance the interests of this council."
The council's first meeting is March 20 in Washington D.C.
Kaler has been the U's president since July 1.
