Recount shows one-vote margin in Meeker County commissioner race

A recount confirms that Meeker County Commissioner Dave Gabrielson lost last week's election by one vote.

Challenger Dale Fenrich came out on top, 1,069 to 1,068.

The West Central Tribune notes that there was a glitch in the race on Election Night, though.

Election officials have discovered that one voter had been given two ballots, stuck together. The voter filled out the front of one ballot and the back of the other. That meant that the number of votes counted did not equal the number of voters' signatures. So one ballot had been randomly pulled from the ballot box, making it appear the race was tied.

But after the hand recount, officials are now confident that they've got it right.

Gabrielson, though, told the paper that he's considering a lawsuit.

With his defeat, the Meeker County board will have an entirely new makeup when it convenes in January. Four of the five incumbents were defeated, and one didn't run for re-election.
