A successful summer job program for low-income youth in St. Paul begins its 2012 sign-up next week.
The Youth Job Corps provides summer jobs and career exploration for economically disadvantaged or at-risk St. Paul youth and young adults ages 14-24.
Last year, 429 young people got jobs through the program; a survey showed that 88 percent thought it was a positive experience.
They worked on community-service projects, learning about such jobs as aquatics, construction, landscaping, video production, entrepreneurship, media, technology, sports and recreation, and general office work at more than 80 work spots around the city.
The jobs average about 15 hours per week, paying $7.25 per hour. And the jobs include safety training and instruction on machinery, power tools, cleaning supplies and emergency procedures.
Sign-up can be done online or at city libraries, rec centers and schools, between March 5 and March 30;
Most jobs will run from June 18 to Aug. 24.
