Today you will find a new feature on MinnPost: selections from MNopedia.

MNopedia, a new project of the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS), is an evolving online encyclopedia about Minnesota. MHS describes it as "a free, curated, authoritative resource" whose articles are prepared by historians, consulting experts, professional writers, and others.

The site includes multimedia entries about "significant people, places, events and things in Minnesota history, from the Stone Arch Bridge and Soo Line Railroad to the Schubert Club and Strauss Ice Skates," MHS explains in an FAQ brochure. MNopedia is made possible by the Legacy Amendment's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

With MHS, MinnPost will begin a two-pronged partnership to expand MNopedia's reach and develop new entries.

  • Starting today, MinnPost will publish one entry each week from  MNopedia. Entries will be curated by MinnPost web producer Tom Nehil.
  • Beginning on Monday, MinnPost will publish, twice monthly for the next 10 months, news articles that relate to historical events in Minnesota; their content will then be developed into MNopedia entries. These articles will be researched and produced by MinnPost writers under the direction of co-managing editor Susan Albright in conjunction with MNopedia editor Molly Huber.

You can read today's MNopedia entry here.
